From the south
Take the A1(M) north to exit 6, A1000, signed Welwyn (not Welwyn Garden City). Go through several roundabouts following signs for the B656 signposted to Codicote and Hitchin. Drive through Codicote. Just as you leave Codicote, passing a Wyevale Garden centre on your right, turn left along a lane to Whitwell. After about 2 miles you reach Whitwell. Turn right on B651, signposted Hitchin.
To visit the main farm (A) (post code SG4 8DJ), travel along the B651 to the Strathmore Arms pub. At the pub, there is a small cross-roads. Turn right, and drive up Bullock’s Hill. Continue along this narrow lane, avoiding possible turns to the left, until the lane takes your through the farmyard. Stop when between two farmyards.
To visit the old dairy site (B) (post code SG4 8DL), travel along the B651 to the Strathmore Arms pub. At the pub, there is a small cross-roads. Turn right, and drive up Bullock’s Hill. Take the first left after driving up Bullock’s Hill. Follow this winding road until you reach a farm yard.
To visit the Walled Garden(C) (post code SG4 8BP), travel ½ a mile along the B651, turn left through the second set of white gates, next to a house. The walled garden is on your right, and is entered through the metal gates. Coaches should stay on the drive while loading and unloading. When ready, the coach can travel further up the drive to turn on the gravel in front of St. Paul’s Walden Bury (the large house) (F). Please turn coach engines off if waiting outside the Bury.
To visit the Forest School site(D and E) (post-code SG4 7RW), take the B651 north from Whitwell, passing the Strathmore arms and going up a hill. You will pass gates to the Sue Ryder Home at Stagenhoe on your left. Continue on the B651 downhill, with Hitch Wood on your left. After ½ mile take the turning on the left (Hitch Wood Lane). On the corner there is a small car park (D). You will either be met at the car park, from which a footpath leads to the Forest School site, or the coach may drive along Hitch Wood lane for 1 mile. Shortly after the woods on the right hand side finish, there is a small lay-by on the left, where metal posts mark a potential access route to the woods (E). This is a suitable location to stop and unload children.
From the north:
Take the A1(M) south to exit 8, follow road to Hitchin. At outskirts of Hitchin at large roundabout take B656 to Welwyn. After 2 miles turn right to Whitwell and St Paul’s Walden, along B651. You will pass Hitch Wood lane and Hitch Wood, where the forest school site is located (D and E). After another mile you reach St Paul’s Walden. Bullock’s Hill is on the left as you pass the Strathmore Arms pub on your right, and leads to the main Farm (A) and Old Dairy site (B). ½ mile further along the B651, just beyond a bend in the road, turn right through white gates, next to a house, and up a long drive to reach the walled garden (C) and St Paul’s Walden Bury (F).
